A OneSource
client since 2003, Ben Westlund, a Republican Oregon state
Senator began thinking about switching parties soon after
surviving cancer. In early 2004, with the help of OSS principal,
Stacey Dycus, Westlund ran a write-in campaign to add the
Democratic nomination to his name. The campaign included an
endorsement ad and a mail piece. Results: 8% of Democrats wrote
Westlund in.
In the 2005 session,
Westlund became a leader for civil rights for GLBT Oregonians. OSS
provided speech writing and political support.
In February 2006, Westlund became an independent and launched a campaign
for Governor.
OSS provided
advance strategy and message development, then managed his
statewide campaign including gathering 50,000 signatures,
raising over half a million dollars and garnering extensive
media coverage in six months. The OPS-designed website,
www.westlundforgovernor.com received Politics1 Site of the Day
while their ad received attention on the National Journal's
Hotline.
So as to not be a
spoiler, Westlund withdrew before qualifying and endorsed the Democratic
incumbent and, after the election, OSS helped him switch to Democrat.
He is currently running unopposed for Oregon State Treasurer.

It's official, you rock. More attendees than expected, more [money]
raised, more sponsors, more excitement and enthusiasm. Damn good job.

The fact that [a TV spot] was
done for about as much money as it costs to buy pizza for a phone bank
is pretty impressive.
